MINI Thirty artists occupy Roslagsgatan and make it the gallery densest street in Stockholm
Curators Corin Kapari, Ida-Johanna Lundqvist and Mariam Nordmark.
MINI consists of approximately 30 works of art in miniature from Swedish and international artists. The exhibition takes place on streets and store windows that have been converted into mini galleries. Alongside there is photographic documentation of the works with a photo exhibit on Swop Art.
MINI represents the spectrum between street art and more established arts. It represents popular culture as well as dealing with philosophical and social issues.
How do you express gender order in a traffic light? Are there surreal street wells? Or mysterious past life forms on the curb? Can grains of sand make out an image? Can dogpoop debates or Roslagsgatan's former porn reputation be illustrated in socialcritic installations? MINI shows art in a playful manner challenging the dominant regimentation in the street by enriching it with artwork.
It sometimes happens that street art is perceived as decorative or amusing and is therefore accepted by the public, while art work that is neither perceived as decorative or amusing may find it harder to be accepted and survive. Can a small format help such works to be perceived as less annoying and therefore allowed to remain? The artworks on display in MINI does not scream for attention. However, thus it require an alert eye of anyone who would like to discover them ...
By taking the art out to the street it creates a democratic arena for art that reaches a much wider audience than the gallery audience. MINI encourages people who cross the street, to be more aware of the street environment by attracting those interested to search for shows in miniature. MINI takes its inspiration from the works of street artist Slinkachu, staging miniature people and situations on the streets of London. We take note of Slinkachu's idea of creating art in miniature, and allow the installation on the street - as well as photo documentation of the installation. A further source of inspiration is The Wrong Gallery in New York that consists of a single glass door and one square meter exhibition space inside.
